Client: Mercer
Sector: Financial Services - Employee Benefits
Solution: Headhunting Campaign

Mercer approached IDEX Consulting with a mandate to source and secure an experienced Healthcare Consultant. The individual needed to have a strong track record of success, be based within London and also working for one of their key competitors. This was a key role for Mercer, as it would be a significant step to strengthen their market position in London, in line with their UK and regional growth strategy to exceed budget by successfully winning new clients..

IDEX Consulting’s specialist Employee Benefits Consultant, Ashlea Walton, took the original brief and initially arranged a face-to-face meeting with the Southern Consulting Leader to discuss further.
The key aspects of the brief were discussed in great detail, including the importance of the role to group strategy, the impact the business hoped the person could achieve and the specific type of individual they were looking for, including background, level of experience and the ideal/essential aspects of the person specification. Additionally, IDEX discussed the current market conditions, remuneration, suitable competitors, company culture, timescales and the medium / long term goals of Mercer – in order to assure we were able to match the right individual for the long term.
Ashlea recommended a proactive headhunting campaign, feeling that this was the most effective solution for Mercer’s needs. Ashlea originally utilised her extensive network and knowledge of the London market to identify and research all potential candidates that would be a good fit. This list of potential individuals was discussed with the recruiting manager to highlight any particular individuals he knew in the market and did/didn’t want to approach (Having been in the market a long time, the recruiting manager knew quite a number of individuals).
IDEX then approached all of the identified individuals with targeted headhunt calls to arrange an initial conversation and ultimately create a short list. The applicants on this shortlist were met face-to-face for a more in-depth conversation about their background, aspirations and motivations as well as discussing the brief to ensure it was something they were keen to progress with.

This process identified 2 strong candidates that were recommended for an interview, with the client meeting both and progressing 1 candidate to final stage before deciding to offer them the role.

The chosen individual was actually more senior than originally planned, but provided exactly what Mercer were looking for so they revaluated the package based on IDEX Suggestions and secured the individual within 2 months of initially meeting IDEX. After the successful completion of the project, the appointed candidate joined Mercer with 10+ years’ experience specialising in Large Corporate Healthcare Consultancy in London.

The new service centre would additionally be creating a “Centre of Excellence” for JLT, dealing with specialist Marine, Financial & Professional, Construction, Commercial & Leisure and Credit & Political risks across the UK at SME / Mid Corporate level.

The Process

IDEX provided insight into the current market and devised a strategy to attract, secure and retain talented individuals from within the Birmingham market. These ranged from senior members of staff, such as Operations Director, through to Account Handlers within each specialism.

A vital part of the project was to utilise IDEX’s reputation and relationships to make potential candidates aware of the investment that JLT were making into Birmingham and the opportunities that this would create for the right type of individuals.

We understood the impact our assistance had on the business’ market reputation to be seen as actively growing so, throughout the project, we kept in close contact with key decision makers to keep momentum going through to completion.

As a result of this work, we:
  • Assisted in the growth of the team, from the original 8 internal employees to over 70 people by September 2017
  • Made the market aware that the organisation were making large investments into growth
  • Sourced individuals with specialist sector experience to assist with the expansion of the team, recruiting from support to management level
  • Encouraged JLT to attend networking events and sponsor the Young Achiever Award at the BII Dinner to help raise their profile
As a result, IDEX received extremely positive feedback regarding our service delivery and due to the success of the project, we have a continued our relationship with JLT and continue to help them grow and develop the operation.

IDEX have been a key partner for us as we pursue our strategy of building and developing our new “Trading” team in Birmingham. AFH approached IDEX consulting to appoint a Head of Property Investments, a very niche role within the market place. The role would be based out of Bromsgrove, an area they have never recruited into before, therefore they needed advice on their talent attraction strategy.
